Farmsafe WA Alliance - Founded by Farmers for Farmers

An independent not-for-profit, non-government organisation encouraging and leading the way to safer farming

The Safety of Young People in Agriculture

Farmsafe WA in conjunction with collaborative partners, have successfully delivered 19 free interactive workshops across schools in the Midwest and Great Southern regions between 2011 and 2013. We can now take that total to 31 workshops in 2014, with our recent delivery of workshops in the South West Region in March.

As a result of successful evaluations, The Safety of Young People in Agriculturecampaign secured a 12 month extension for further funding from the Department of Health WA. This extension has made way for the delivery of this project to primary schools in the South West region of our state.

The campaign received the Highly Commendable Award for Outstanding Achievement at the ICCWA Community Safety Awards 2013 and now in 2014 has reached its benefits to around 3200 upper primary students.

Farmsafe WA collaborated with partnering organisations, namely St John Ambulance, WA  Police, Royal Life Saving Society WA (RLSSWA) and Wesfarmers Federation Insurance (WFI), to plan these highly interactive workshops, were delivered at Adam Road Primary, Dalyellup Primary, Margaret River Primary, Cowaramup Primary, East Manjimup Primary, Bridgetown Primary, Amaroo Primary and Waroona District High. With Karridale Primary, Wilson Park Primary and Nannup District High attending as feeder schools.

The workshops provided upper primary students with skills and knowledge about the hazards and risks associated with living on and visiting rural properties. Students were encouraged to look at how they can minimise exposure to such risks and deal with emergency situations.

Together with our partnering organisations, the workshops aimed to raise awareness and covered various safety topics including:

  • On and off Road Safety
  • General Rural Community Safety
  • Water Safety
  • On-Farm Safety
  • Basic Emergency Preparedness
