Alcohol and Drug Project

Alcohol and Drug Education, Awareness and Prevention Project 2013

Supported and funded by Healthway, Farmsafe WA along with key collaborative partners, piloted a new initiative to ultimately reduce the number of alcohol and drug related injuries that currently occur in our regional areas.

This campaign was  delivered over a 12 month period at the WA College of Agriculture - Denmark.  Year 10 and 11 students at the College participated in a workshop in April, which educated them on important factors relating to alcohol and drug use.  The workshop was structured with interactive stations delivered in partnership with School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA), Paraplegic Benefit Fund (PBF), Great Southern Community Drug Service, St John Ambulance, WA Regional Police and Farmsafe WA. This workshop also included a 'Personal Story' presentation from Paraplegic Benefit Fund.

Following this workshop, the students utilised this information during some structured in-class time throughout the year to develop presentations to display what they have learnt in relation to the topic of alcohol and drugs.  These presentations were displayed at the Denmark College Open Day on the 31st of August 2013.

In support of the student's efforts, Farmsafe WA were successful in sourcing local sponsors in the Denmark and Albany regions. Current sponsors include Steel Blue, Denmark Alpaca Farm, Denmark Chocolate Factory, Elders (Mt Barker), Landmark (Albany), Ag Connect WA, Summit Fertilizers and CSBP. These generous sponsors donated first, second and third prizes awarded on the Denmark College Open Day for the most innovative student work.

If you would like more information on this campaign, please contact Farmsafe WA on 9359 4118 or visit the website www.farmsafewa.org.

Following the successful evaluation of this pilot project, Farmsafe WA hopes to be able to take it state-wide to the remaining Agricultural Colleges in WA for the future.
