Current - Young People in Agriculture
In the Midwest Region of WA
Developed in partnership with St John Ambulance, School
Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) the WA Regional Police and
WFI, this new initiative targeted children in upper primary school
environments and involved the coordination and delivery of a series
of workshops at Carnamah, Morawa, Mingenew, Geraldton, Northampton
and Mt Magnet.
The workshops were structured as four
interactive skill stations led by our partners above and Farmsafe
WA with the primary aim to increase awareness and education of the
hazards and risks associated with living on, visiting and/or
engaging in activities on rural properties. In addition, students
also received information on how to respond to and best cope with
emergency situations. Parents, caregivers and teachers were
encouraged to attend so that key messages can be reinforced in the
home and school environments.
Rural properties can be a wonderful
experience and environment for children to grow up in, where
independence and responsibility is created and where family
relationships are strengthened. However, farms and rural properties
are normally both a work and home environment and children are
placed at great risk when playing or simply helping
out.
Statistics show that one child dies on an
Australian farm each fortnight, with one third of these children
being visitors to the property. Many more are injured seriously
enough to be hospitalised.
It is therefore imperative that together we
continue working towards reducing these shocking statistics and
extend the reach of campaigns such as this into other schools
throughout the various regions of
WA.
Acknowledge and thanks goes to our
collaborative partners, reference group members and participating
schools, as without their expertise and support, these workshops
would not have been possible.
We look forward to delivering this project in the Great Southern
region of WA in 2012-13.
